Head of Zeus triumphed in a “fiercely contested” six-way auction to acquire a debut fantasy trilogy by 30-year-old computer game designer Luke Scull in a “strong six-figure deal”.
Mathilda Imlah bought UK and Commonwealth rights to The Grim Company and two sequels through Robert Dinsdale, working in association with A M Heath. Deals are “pending” in the US and Europe.
The Grim Company is described as “a dark, anti-heroic fantasy for fans of Joe Abercombie and Scott Lynch”, featuring a cast of conflicted heroes embroiled in a civil war in a world of gods and wild magic.
Imlah said: “I’ve been searching for a landmark fantasy series for some time now, and as soon as I entered Luke Johnson’s world, full of breathtaking battles, flawed heroes, rotting titans and divine tyrants, I knew this was the one.”
Head of Zeus have published The Grim Company in hardback in March 2013 to already strong positive reviews.
We think Luke is going to be another British phenomenon and we were thrilled when he did an exclusive signing for Doodled Books collectors. Each first edition book is signed lined, dated, numbered and doodled.
The Grim Company is truly an epic fantasy debut that shows all the characteristic strengths of the genre whilst managing to avoid almost all its pitfalls. This is one debut not to be missed and marks Luke Scull as one of epic fantasy’s talented debutants.
This is a world dying.
A world where wild magic leaks from the corpses of rotting gods, desperate tyrants battle over fading resources, impassive shapeshifters marshal beasts of enormous size and startling intelligence, and ravenous demons infest the northern mountains. A world where the only difference between a hero and a killer lies in the ability to justify dark deeds.
But even in this world, pockets of resistance remain. When two aging warriors save the life of a young rebel, it proves the foundation for an unlikely fellowship. A fellowship united against tyranny, yet composed of self-righteous outlaws, crippled turncoats and amoral mercenaries. A grim company, indeed…
