Review

“the novel’s strengths are its clear, uncliched prose and its power to evoke creepy events without descending into a mere gorefest. It offers a forceful frisson and yet, unlike some books in this genre, it is possible to finish reading it without feeling sullied.” (Nicolette Jones THE SUNDAY TIMES )

“Beautifully written urban fantasy-come-horror story with a twist I certainly didn’t see coming. Lyrical prose, great tension and wonderful creativity come together for a truly creepy story. Highly recommended. ” (THE BOOK BAG )

‘It’s remarkably good. What’s more, the intelligent, tortured Nyktomorph and its child, the ugly, ballet-dancing Horror, are two of the best villain’s henchthings in any recent fantasy. There’s no girly rivalry, no fussing over outfits, no procession of pretty boys. This is head and shoulders above most other teen fantasies. Buy it for a young adult, but read it yourself before you give it to them.’ (SFX )

“Savannah Grey isn’t at all what I was expecting, but I loved it anyway. It’s a perfect blend of mystery, horror and suspense, and even has a bit of romance thrown in too. It’s wonderfully written, with a well-executed story that twists and turns like a winding road… To say this book is unusual is an understatement, but that’s part of its charm and appeal. At times lyrical and haunting, Savannah Grey is by far my favourite offering from Cliff McNish.” (WONDROUSREADS BLOG )

“(CONT) The horror lover in me is happy, and I’m glad I’ve found a book that is both gruesome and romantic. It’s a rare mash-up, but it works incredibly well. I hope more authors have the confidence to try something a little bit different, as it’s like opening the door to a breath of fresh air. ” (Jenny Davies WONDROUSREADS BLOG )

“Savannah Grey is good, solid writing, with characters that sizzle and baddies that make you pray for a hero to come and save the day… for someone like Savannah, no matter how odd her own freakish powers are. It’s a case of better the devil you know. If you’re keen to try something different, if you’ve grown tired of the standard fare of the supernatural YA novels out there, Savannah Grey is your antidote. Well worth the read.” (Liz de Jager SFREVU.COM )

Product Description

It’s a difficult time for fifteen-year-old Savannah Grey – she’s settled into her latest foster placement, but her body is acting strangely. Then other strange things begin to happen: nature, it seems, is exerting an overpowering force on the world. Birds behave erratically; gusts of wind blow leaves so fiercely they seem to lure people away. And Savannah discovers she has supernatural powers. Meanwhile, she feels drawn to the new boy Reece whose life is even stranger than hers. Quickly Savannah and Reece realise that nature has a purpose for them both. For they are on course to meet the vile and evil Ocrassa, who wants to destroy the world by corrupting nature. And it wants Savannah Grey to help realise its savage intent.

About the Author

When Cliff McNish was born, the electricity in his house failed, plunging him in darkness. Perhaps this explains why his first published book began as a story about a really nasty witch for his young daughter, Rachel. THE DOOMSPELL and its sequels became instant bestsellers, with rights sold in 17 languages. Since then, Cliff’s multiple-award winning dark fantasies for older readers, BREATHE and ANGEL, have continued to win him avid fans. Cliff is a popular visitor in schools and at festivals. He lives with his wife in south-east London in a house that is very dark and very old.
